HOMEWORK

Developing self-discipline, organization and time-management skills are important executive function skills our students must learn to be successful adults. Homework is a way for our students to develop those skills, and it is an important part of our curriculum.

The Kansas State Department of Education places a high priority on schools to implement structured literacy across the curriculum. Besides promoting effective structured literacy practices in the classroom, ASOP strives to incorporate these practices into the student’s homework assignments by including some type of reading and writing assignment.

The primary goal of the reading and writing homework assignment is to teach executive functioning skills:

  • Organization—have the necessary materials

  • Follow directions—know what to do by listening to instruction

  • Time management—use time wisely

  • Task initiation—begin work immediately

  • Task completion and follow through—finish completely and hand in

  • Self-advocacy—ask for help when needed

  • Develop positive work habits—complete task independently.

Students will have one reading and writing homework assignment in each core subject area (English, math, social studies and science) each week (Monday-Thursday). Students have time to do their homework during their 7th period resource class. Homework is due by 9:00am the following morning.
