Student Activities Club Brings Tech Support to Seniors | April 2026
ASOP’s Student Activities Club, led by ELA teacher Kathy, brought smiles and tech support to interested residents at Novel Place Senior Living in Overland Park. The students worked one-on-one to help residents tackle everyday tech challenges, including how to comment on Facebook posts, make screens easier to read by adjusting text size, navigate email, download apps, and more. A great day of learning, sharing, and building connections across generations!

Director of Counseling Hollyn Smith (left) and Principal Annie Swartz joined the fun at Tyler's House for Teens’ first-ever Community Resource Night. Students and families had the chance to explore all the amazing resources available in our community to support teens. It was a great way to connect, learn, and see what’s out there!
student activities club Makes & Donates Dog Toys for KC pet project | February 2026
ASOP’s Student Activities club, led by ELA teacher Kathy, made homemade dog toys from donated supplies for KC Pet Project shelter dogs. The students braided and knotted fabric to create colorful and durable rope pull toys. They also made fun water bottle toys by placing empty plastic bottles inside fabric sleeves and securing the ends—giving dogs a safe way to enjoy the satisfying crinkle sound they love. These toys will help keep shelter dogs happy, active, and engaged while they wait for their forever homes.
School Donates Over 800 Food Items to Harvesters | November 2025
ASOP's Student Activities club, led by ELA teacher Kathy, coordinated a school food drive for Harvesters with the goal of collecting at least 750 food items. When it was all over, students and staff had brought in over 800 items that were then donated to a local Harvesters food pantry! The club gave each classroom a donation box, which the students were encouraged to decorate, and several students wore food-themed hats during the drive to inspire donations.
school springs May Day SurprisE on neighbors | May 2024
In keeping with the May Day tradition, ASOP surprised its neighbors, Blackford Brokerage, with May Day boxes containing cupcakes.
Several of Art teacher Joy's students decorated the boxes, and then "paraded" over to Blackford with Joy, Mental Health Counselor Hollyn, and therapy dog Abby to wish their staff a Happy May Day!
STUDENTS AND art TEACHER DONATE ARTWORK FOR A CAUSE | October 2023
Art teacher Joy and 10 of her students created and donated 29 art pieces to InterUrban/ArtHouse's Arts on Fire fundraiser. Over 700 art pieces, donated by local artists but kept anonymous, were available for purchase, with the proceeds helping to fund InterUrban's art programming. Every art piece donated by ASOP was sold, contributing to the $20,000 raised at this event!
school supports Veterans Community Project through collection drives | 2022-2023
ASOP’s 2022-2023 Student Council voted to support the Veterans Community Project (VCP) in Kansas City through two collection drives: one for socks and another for hygiene items. The VCP provides walk-in support services and tiny homes in its Village to our nation’s veterans. VCP staff member Kristin Griffins spoke at ASOP about her organization’s mission after accepting the socks donations. Later in the year, some Student Council and staff members visited the VCP to deliver the collected hygiene items and were treated to a tour by Kristin of the community center, a tiny home, and VCP’s warehouse.

Students in art class decorated pumpkins for the Sunflower House Pumpkin Palooza fundraiser. Sunflower House is a local, non-profit organization that helps children who are victims of abuse. Students decorated and donated 20 pumpkins of all sizes for the event.
