OUR EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

A DIFFERENT APPROACH. A PLACE TO THRIVE.

Every student learns differently. The right educational environment can make all the difference.

At Accelerated Schools of Overland Park, we believe students thrive when they are understood, appropriately challenged, and supported as individuals. Our approach combines personalized academic instruction, executive-function skill development, and social-emotional learning in a structured, compassionate environment where students can build on their strengths and work through challenges.

We serve neurodivergent learners, gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students, and students navigating learning differences, attention or executive-function challenges, anxiety, and other social-emotional needs. We also welcome students who have not found success in traditional school settings.

We look beyond diagnoses, grades, and past struggles to understand each student's abilities, interests, needs, and potential. Our goal is to help students rediscover confidence and joy in learning while developing the skills and independence they need for the future.

THREE PILLARS. ONE INDIVIDUALIZED APPROACH.

Our educational approach brings together three interconnected areas of support. Each plays an important role in helping students experience academic progress, personal growth, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Students learn at different paces, respond to different teaching methods, and bring different strengths to the classroom. At ASOP, personalized instruction allows us to meet students where they are academically while helping them move forward with confidence.

Our approach includes:

  • Individualized instruction and pacing: Students work at a pace that reflects their current skills and learning needs, with opportunities to master foundational concepts and advance when ready.

  • Understanding individual strengths and needs: Assessment helps us identify areas of strength, pinpoint learning gaps, and guide instructional decisions.

  • Targeted academic support: Students receive instruction designed to address areas of difficulty while continuing to develop their abilities and pursue appropriate academic challenges.

  • Small classes and close teacher support: Our approximately 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio allows for frequent interaction, individualized attention, and timely feedback.

  • Structure and flexibility: Organized classrooms, clear expectations, and appropriate instructional adjustments help students focus, participate, and make meaningful progress.

  • Technology that supports learning: Computers and other classroom tools complement teacher-led instruction and help students engage with their work.

We want students to experience what it feels like to understand a challenging concept, recognize their own progress, and discover that they are capable of more than they may have believed.

Knowing what to do and being able to organize, begin, manage, and finish the work are two different things. Executive-function challenges can make school difficult even for students who understand the material and have strong academic abilities.

At ASOP, executive-function skills are incorporated throughout instruction and daily school life. Rather than simply expecting students to be organized or manage their time independently, we help them develop these abilities through guidance, practice, feedback, and accountability.

Students work toward strengthening skills such as:

  • Getting started on tasks and following through to completion

  • Organizing materials, assignments, and information

  • Planning ahead, prioritizing responsibilities, and managing time

  • Sustaining attention and navigating distractions

  • Breaking larger assignments into manageable steps

  • Developing effective study habits and monitoring their progress

  • Recognizing when they need help and communicating their needs

Daily routines, teacher check-ins, clear expectations, progress feedback, and a resource period provide opportunities to practice these skills with support.

Our daily report cards also help students understand their progress and provide an important channel of communication between school and home. Homework is intended to reinforce learning and develop responsibility and independent work habits, with realistic expectations for students.

The goal is not simply to help students complete today's assignments. It is to help them gradually become more confident, capable, and independent learners.

III. Social-Emotional Learning & Well-being

Students learn best when they feel safe, understood, and connected.

Academic growth is closely connected to emotional well-being. Anxiety, frustration, social difficulties, sensory experiences, and past school struggles can affect a student's ability to participate in learning and feel comfortable at school.

ASOP prioritizes social-emotional learning (SEL) alongside academic instruction. We foster an environment where students are treated with respect, encouraged to develop meaningful relationships, and supported as they learn to understand themselves and navigate challenges.

Our SEL approach includes:

  • Individual counseling opportunities: One-on-one visits with a mental health counselor provide opportunities for students to discuss concerns and explore strategies for managing challenges.

  • Pathways: Small-group opportunities to explore mental health and social-emotional topics.

  • Calm Corner: A designated space in the Counseling Center where students can work toward emotional regulation.

  • Peer connections: Our Ambassador program pairs incoming students with peer mentors to help them feel welcomed and connected.

  • Therapy dogs: Three staff dogs certified through Pet Partners are part of our school community.

  • Everyday opportunities for connection: Lunch and break times, Friday seventh-period clubs, field trips, holiday parties, and other enrichment activities give students opportunities to socialize and build relationships.

We recognize that students may communicate stress or overwhelm in different ways. Our approach emphasizes understanding, encouragement, skill development, and appropriate support so students can work through challenges and participate more confidently in school life.

A SAFE, STRUCTURED & COMPASSIONATE ENVIRONMENT

A place where students can feel they belong.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The learning environment matters. Predictable routines, clear expectations, supportive relationships, and an atmosphere of respect can help students feel more comfortable engaging with learning and with one another.

At ASOP, we work to create a school culture in which students feel valued as individuals and supported as they grow. Our approach includes:

  • Structure and predictability: Organized classrooms and consistent expectations help students understand what is expected and focus on learning.

  • Positive teacher-student relationships: Close teacher supervision, ongoing feedback, and relationship building help students feel seen and supported.

  • Respect and belonging: We value individual differences and foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and appreciation for diversity.

  • A commitment to student safety: We maintain zero tolerance for bullying and promote awareness, kindness, and respectful interactions.

  • Recognition of progress: Celebrating student accomplishments helps reinforce growth, effort, and a positive sense of self.

We want school to be a place where students can take appropriate learning risks, ask questions, make mistakes, and try again—without feeling that a challenge defines who they are or what they can achieve.

INDIVIDUALIZED STUDENTS. INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. SHARED PARTNERSHIP.

We work with families to support each student's growth.

Every student's path is different. A student may need targeted academic instruction, support with organization and time management, opportunities to strengthen social connections, or a combination of approaches that evolves over time.

We partner with families to understand each student and support their success. Communication about progress, collaboration around challenges, and a willingness to adjust approaches help us work toward a shared understanding of what each student needs.

We recognize that progress does not look the same for everyone. It may mean mastering a difficult academic skill, beginning assignments with greater independence, learning to ask for help, navigating a challenging situation, or feeling more connected to peers and teachers.

Each step matters.

Our goal is to help students recognize their strengths, develop the skills to navigate their challenges, and build the confidence to explore what is possible.
