SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

We help students navigate emotions and relationships.

Academic success and emotional well-being go hand in hand. Challenges such as anxiety, frustration, social difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and past negative school experiences can affect a student's ability to engage in learning, build relationships, and feel safe and accepted at school.

Students are supported as they develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and strategies for navigating challenges. Through positive relationships and guided practice, they build confidence, strengthen social connections, and learn to manage emotions and interact with others.

Our SEL approach includes:

  • Individual counseling opportunities: Students can meet one-on-one with a mental health counselor to discuss concerns, work through challenges, and develop strategies to support their emotional well-being.

  • Pathways: This program brings small groups of students together with our mental health counselors to explore mental health and social-emotional topics, develop skills, and build understanding.

  • Calm Corner: Located in the Counseling Center, this designated quiet space allows students to pause, regroup, and practice emotional regulation strategies in a supportive environment.

  • Peer connections: Through our Counseling Center’s Ambassador program, incoming students are paired with peer mentors who help them feel welcomed, build connections, and become part of the school community.

  • Therapy dogs: Three staff dogs certified through Pet Partners are part of our school community, offering opportunities for positive interactions and connection.

  • Everyday opportunities for connection: From lunch and break times to Friday activity clubs, field trips, holiday parties, and other enrichment activities, students have regular opportunities to socialize, develop friendships, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

We recognize that students may communicate stress or overwhelm in different ways. Our approach emphasizes understanding, encouragement, skill development, and individualized support, helping students navigate challenges and participate more confidently in school life.
